Quick answer
For Elkhorn homes we install seamless aluminum gutters sized for large roof planes, fit gutter guards matched to the trees on the lot, handle gutters on new construction once the roof and fascia are done, and repair wind and hail damage after storms. Water gets carried well away from deep basements. Call us for a measurement on any Elkhorn house.
Elkhorn dates to 1865 and was platted in 1867, when the Union Pacific Railroad reached the spot. It stayed its own city until 2007, when the Nebraska Supreme Court upheld Omaha's annexation and the Elkhorn council held its last meeting on February 27. Since March 1 of that year it has been part of Omaha.
The single 68022 ZIP code counted close to 31,000 residents in the 2020 Census, and growth has continued westward since. That means a lot of houses that are 5 to 20 years old, many of them two-stories with complex rooflines, plus active building sites where the gutters are one of the last exterior jobs before final grade.
Large roofs and new builds in Elkhorn
Newer Elkhorn homes tend to have tall roofs with several hips and valleys, and two valleys often meet over one inside corner of the gutter. In a heavy storm that corner gets more water than a 5-inch gutter can catch, and it shoots right over the front edge onto the patio or landscaping. We usually specify 6-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts on these roofs and add a splash guard where a valley lands.
On homes under construction we schedule after the roof, fascia and siding are finished, and ideally before the landscaper sets final grade. That timing lets us place downspouts where buried drain lines or extensions can run cleanly instead of across a new patio. Builder-grade 2x3 downspouts on finished houses are one of the most common upgrades we make here.
Elkhorn and the April 2024 storms
On April 26, 2024, the National Weather Service tracked an EF4 tornado that ran more than 31 miles from Elkhorn through Bennington to Blair, one of 25 tornadoes in its area that day. The same outbreak brought hail up to golf ball size across parts of the metro. For many Elkhorn homeowners, gutters ripped loose by wind or flattened by debris were among the first repairs on the list.
Away from the big storms, the open western edge of the city sees steady wind, and young yard trees drop seeds and small leaves that wash into gutters with shingle grit. Stainless micro-mesh handles that mix better than screens with large holes, and it keeps downspouts from packing solid.

What we install most on Elkhorn homes
6-Inch Seamless Gutters
Tall roofs with multiple valleys put more water into each run than a standard gutter can hold. Six-inch seamless aluminum with 3x4 outlets keeps up during the heaviest summer storms.

Elkhorn is still growing. We coordinate with builders and owners so gutters go up after siding and before final grade, with downspouts placed to match the drainage plan.

Fine stainless mesh blocks seeds, small leaves and shingle grit from younger trees, which coarse screens let through, so gutters on tall two-story roofs need far less ladder work.

Wind and flying debris can tear gutters off fascia in minutes. We make the roof edge safe first, then repair or replace runs once the storm has passed.
More on this serviceValley Splash Guards
Where two valleys meet over one inside corner, water overshoots the gutter. A splash guard at that corner turns it back into the trough instead of onto the deck.

Many Elkhorn homes have finished basements. Solid PVC lines carry downspout water to a pop-up emitter well out in the yard, away from window wells and foundation walls.

Elkhorn and its neighbors
Elkhorn sits at the western edge of Omaha, with the older railroad town center surrounded by newer subdivisions on every side. Millard lies to the southeast, the Standing Bear Lake area is to the northeast, and Bennington is a short drive north along the same path the 2024 tornado followed. Crews working Elkhorn often cover those areas the same week.

FAQ
Gutter questions from Elkhorn
When should gutters go on a new Elkhorn house?
After the roof, fascia, soffit and siding are complete, and before final grading and landscaping. Gutters hung earlier tend to get bumped by siding crews, and if grading happens first there is no room left to plan buried drain lines. If you are building, give us a call when the siding is nearly done and we will fit the gutter install into the builder schedule.
Do Elkhorn homes really need 6-inch gutters?
Not every home, but many of the larger two-stories here do. A 6-inch gutter holds a good deal more water than a 5-inch, and paired with 3x4 downspouts it drains much faster. If water pours over the front edge at inside corners during summer storms, that is a sign the system is undersized. Our comparison of 5-inch and 6-inch gutters walks through how we decide.
What gutter guard works best on a newer Elkhorn home?
On most Elkhorn lots the debris is small: seeds, small leaves, shingle grit and some cottonwood fluff. Stainless micro-mesh stops all of that while letting water through. Perforated screens are cheaper and fine for big leaves, but small debris slips through them. Every guard still needs an occasional rinse on top. Our gutter guard page compares the types.
Can you secure gutters torn loose by wind the same day?
In most cases, yes. Our phone is answered 24/7, and the first job after a storm is making things safe, which means removing hanging sections or fastening them back so nothing falls on people or cars. Permanent repair or replacement follows once we can see the full damage to the fascia and roof edge in daylight.
