Storm Damage Gutter Repair in Omaha, NE

A gutter swinging off the eave after a windstorm, or a run crushed under a fallen branch, is a hazard that cannot wait for a dry week. It can pull fascia loose, strike a window or come down on someone.

Quick answer

Storm damage gutter repair covers gutters and downspouts torn, bent or knocked loose by wind, falling limbs or debris. The first visit makes the house safe by removing or securing hanging sections. A second visit handles the permanent repair or a new run. Call us whenever a gutter is hanging, flapping or blocking a door or driveway.

Wind does its damage by prying. A gust gets under a loose end cap or lifts a downspout away from the wall, and the gutter acts like a lever against its own hangers. One fastener lets go, then the next, until a whole run is hanging from one corner. Falling limbs do the opposite, folding a gutter straight down and sometimes tearing the fascia off with it.

Our phone is answered around the clock, so you can reach us when the storm passes, not the next business day. The job splits into two parts on purpose. Making it safe is quick and keeps more damage from happening. The real repair is planned once we can see everything in daylight.

Making it safe the same day

When a section is dangling, the priority is getting it under control. We cut free a twisted section that cannot be saved, or tie and fasten a run that can, so it no longer swings in the next gust. Downspouts that have come off the wall get removed or strapped back so they do not hit siding or windows.

We also check what the damage exposed. A gutter torn away can leave bare fascia, open roof edge or loose drip edge where rain will get in. Those spots get temporary cover until the permanent work is scheduled.

Temporary fixes that hold until the real repair

A temporary fix is meant to last days or a few weeks, not a season. It might be a section of gutter re-hung with a few screws to keep water off a door, a downspout extension laid on the ground to move water off a walkway, or a missing run left open with the roof edge protected.

We tell you plainly which parts are temporary. That way nobody mistakes a storm patch for a finished repair, and you know what the permanent visit will cover.

Permanent repair or a new run

Once the weather settles, we look at each damaged run on its own. Gutters that came off their hangers but kept their shape can go back up on new hidden hangers. Runs that are kinked, split, twisted or crushed under a limb are replaced, because bent aluminum does not straighten into a true line.

Seamless gutters make section replacement straightforward. We roll a new piece on site to the exact length, match the profile and color as closely as the coil allows, and tie it into the outlets. Where a limb tore the fascia off too, fascia replacement comes first so the new gutter has something solid to hang on.

  • Re-hang undamaged runs on new hangers into framing
  • Replace kinked or crushed runs with new seamless lengths
  • Rebuild torn fascia and drip edge before re-hanging
  • Replace bent downspouts, elbows and straps
  • Re-pitch and flush every repaired run before we leave

Wind, branches and ladders

Most storm damage we see comes from three sources. Straight-line wind lifts and peels gutters, usually starting at a corner or a loose end. Falling branches crush runs from above, often from big yard trees with brittle wood. Ladders thrown down by wind, or leaned on gutters during cleanup, bend the front edge and kink the trough.

Hail is its own category, with its own record-keeping. If the same storm brought hail, our hail damage replacement page covers documenting dents for an insurer.

What to look for

Signs of storm damage to gutters

A run hanging loose

Any section that sags well below the roof edge or swings in the wind has lost several hangers and needs to be secured right away.

Downspout off the wall

A downspout leaning out or lying in the yard has lost its straps, and the outlet above it may be torn or bent as well.

Crushed or kinked trough

A gutter folded where a branch landed cannot drain past the fold, and the metal around it is often split along the bottom.

Exposed fascia or roof edge

Bare wood or loose drip edge where a gutter used to be lets rain soak the fascia and the roof deck behind it.

Water pouring in one spot

Rain sheeting off the roof edge at a single point after a storm usually means a seam split or a section shifted out of line.

End caps or miters loose

Wind often starts at corners. A popped end cap or opened miter can let the rest of the run peel back in the next gust.

How the job goes

How we handle storm damage

  1. 1

    Answer the call

Call us when the storm passes. We ask what is hanging, what is blocked and whether anything struck a window or door, so we bring the right materials.

  2. 2

    Secure or remove hazards

We cut away sections that cannot be saved, fasten the rest so they stop moving, and pull loose downspouts away from walls, windows and walkways.

  3. 3

    Cover exposed areas

Bare fascia or open roof edge left by a torn gutter gets temporary protection so the next rain does not soak the wood or the deck.

  4. 4

    Assess in daylight

With the house safe, we inspect every run, check hangers, seams and fascia, and decide which sections re-hang and which need replacing.

  5. 5

    Repair and flush

We rebuild fascia where needed, hang new or re-used runs to a pitched line, replace bent downspouts and flush every run to confirm it drains.

Omaha conditions

Storm season in the Omaha metro

Omaha storms do not stay polite. On April 26, 2024, the National Weather Service office for the area tracked 25 tornadoes, including an EF4 that ran more than 31 miles from Elkhorn through Bennington to Blair. Even outside a tornado path, the straight-line wind around storms like that peels gutters off corners across whole neighborhoods.

Trees add to it. Silver maple was planted widely along Nebraska streets and yards, and its brittle wood breaks easily in storms. A limb falling onto an eave is one of the most common reasons we replace a run rather than re-hang it.

FAQ

Storm Damage Gutter Repair questions

Is a hanging gutter an emergency?

It can be. A section swinging in the wind can break a window, tear more fascia off the house or fall on someone using a door or driveway below. If a gutter is hanging, keep people clear of it and call us. Making it safe is quick, and it keeps a single damaged run from turning into several.

Can a storm-damaged gutter be put back up?

If it came off its hangers without bending, yes. We re-hang it on new hidden hangers into framing and re-pitch it. If it is kinked, split or twisted, it should be replaced. Bent aluminum holds its bend, and forcing it back leaves a weak spot that leaks and sags. We show you which sections fall into each group.

What should I do before help arrives?

Stay off the ladder, especially in wind or rain. Keep people and pets away from the area under the damage, and move cars if a section could fall on them. If a downspout is lying in the yard, leave it. Take a few photos from the ground of what happened, which helps with planning and any later insurance conversation.

Can you match a replacement section to my existing gutters?

Usually closely. We form seamless sections on site in the same profile and size as your existing run, and coil comes in many colors. Older gutters fade, so a new section can look slightly brighter at first. If the mismatch bothers you, gutter painting can blend the old runs with the new.

Does storm damage to gutters affect the roof?

It can. When wind peels a gutter away, it can lift the drip edge and the first course of shingles, and a falling limb can damage both at once. We check the roof edge wherever a gutter tore loose and point out anything that looks like roofing damage so you can have it looked at by a roofer.
