Gutter Detach and Reset in Omaha for Roof and Siding Jobs
The roofer is coming Monday and the gutters are in the way. Pulled off carelessly, they come back bent, pitched wrong and hung on the same loose spikes they started with.

Omaha, NebraskaQuick answer
Detach and reset means taking existing gutters and downspouts down before a roof, siding, fascia or soffit job, storing them safely, then reinstalling them with new hangers and correct pitch once the other trade is finished. It saves gutters that are still in good shape. When they are not worth saving, we say so before they come down.
Roof replacements, new siding and fascia repairs all need the gutters out of the way. Roofers will often rip them off themselves, and that is where trouble starts. A seamless run that is 40 feet long bends easily if it is lifted by one end, and once it kinks it never hangs straight again.
We handle the gutter side of these projects for homeowners and for roofing and siding crews who would rather not deal with it. Our crew takes the gutters down as whole runs, labels them, sets them somewhere safe, and comes back to hang them when the other work is done. In between, the fascia gets a proper look, which almost never happens otherwise.
Why a careful detach matters
Seamless gutters are strong once they are hung but floppy in the air. Lifting a long run from one end, or dragging it across a roof, bends the back flange and stretches the miters. Sectional gutters come apart at the joints and the sealant tears.
Our crew supports every run at several points as it comes down, with one person every 10 to 15 feet on long sections. Miters stay attached where possible so the corners do not have to be remade. Downspouts are separated at the elbows and kept with their runs.
Storage and labeling while the other work happens
Runs are marked by elevation and position, front left, rear right and so on, and laid flat on blocks or leaned against a wall where they will not be driven over or used as a step. Hangers that will be reused are bagged, though in most cases we put in new ones.
If the roofing or siding job runs long, the gutters wait. Where a home needs drainage in the meantime, especially on a wet spring week, we can rig temporary downspout extensions at the worst corners so water is not dumping straight at the foundation.
What we check while the gutters are off
With the gutters down, the fascia is fully exposed for the first time in years. We probe it for soft wood, look for gaps where water has been running behind the gutter, and check that the drip edge or gutter apron the roofer installs actually reaches into the trough.
Rotted boards get replaced before the gutters go back, either by us or by the roofer if it is in their scope. Hanging gutters on soft fascia means they will pull loose again within a season or two. Our fascia board replacement page explains that work.
- Soft or stained fascia boards, especially at inside corners
- Missing or short drip edge that lets water run behind the gutter
- Old spike holes that will not hold a new fastener
- Downspout outlets that were cut ragged or too small
Resetting with new hangers and fresh pitch
When the gutters go back up, they go up better than they came down. We snap a new string line for slope, typically about a quarter inch of fall every 10 feet toward each outlet, and install hidden hangers screwed into solid wood every 24 inches or so. Old spikes and ferrules go in the scrap pile.
Corners and end caps are resealed with fresh gutter sealant, outlets are checked, and downspouts are refastened with new straps. Then every run gets flushed with a hose so you can see water going where it should. If you would like guards, this is the cheapest time to add them; see gutter guard installation.
When replacing beats resetting
Not every gutter deserves to go back up. Runs with heavy hail dents, sectional systems that leak at every joint, gutters too small for the roof, or a color that will clash with new siding are often better replaced while everything is already apart. The labor to remove them is spent either way.
We look at the gutters before they come down and give you both options. On hail jobs in particular, gutters are frequently part of the same loss as the roof, and replacing them alongside the roof avoids a second setup. Our hail damage replacement page covers how we document that damage for you to share with your insurer.
What to look for
When you need a detach and reset
Roof replacement scheduled
A tear-off and new roof almost always requires gutters to come off so the roofer can install drip edge and shingles at the eave properly.
New siding going on
Siding crews need the gutters and downspouts out of the way to run panels, trim and corners up to the soffit without cutting around brackets.
Fascia or soffit repair
Rotted fascia boards cannot be replaced with a gutter hanging on them, so the gutters come off, the wood is fixed, and the gutters go back.
Exterior painting project
Painters doing fascia and trim get a cleaner result with gutters removed, especially on houses where the fascia has not been painted in years.
Hail claim with roof work
When a hail claim covers the roof, gutters often have to be detached even if they are not being replaced, and the line item needs a crew to do it.
Gutters sound but loose
A good gutter pulling away on old spikes can be taken down and rehung with hidden hangers and correct pitch instead of being replaced.
How the job goes
How a detach and reset job works
- 1
Pre-job look and plan
We look at the gutters, note dents, leaks and fit, and decide with you or your roofer whether they are worth resetting, then set dates that line up with the other trade.
- 2
Remove runs in one piece
Crews support each run at several points as it comes down, keep miters intact where possible, and separate downspouts at the elbows without bending them.
- 3
Label and store safely
Every piece is marked by location and stored flat, off the ground and away from dumpsters, driveways and foot traffic until the roof or siding work is done.
- 4
Check fascia and drip edge
With the eave exposed we probe the fascia, note rot, and confirm the drip edge or gutter apron will direct water into the trough once the gutters return.
- 5
Rehang, pitch and test
Gutters go back on a fresh string line with new hidden hangers, resealed corners and new downspout straps, then every run is flushed to confirm it drains.

Pricing
What detach and reset costs
Detach and reset is mostly labor, priced by footage and the number of downspouts. These national figures help frame it against full replacement.
| Item | Published range |
|---|---|
| Gutter removal on replacement jobs, per foot | $1 to $2 per foot |
| Re-pitching gutters during the reset | $75 to $200 |
| Full replacement instead, per foot | $12 to $25 per foot |
National ranges published by Forbes Home, HomeGuide. Your price depends on the house; we give you a number on the phone or at the house before any work starts. See the full gutter price guide.
Total footage, house height, downspout count and any fascia repair found during the detach set the final price. See our price guide for other ranges.
Omaha conditions
Detach and reset after Omaha storm seasons
Roof work in the metro comes in waves after big hail. The April 2024 storms dropped hail around two inches across in Papillion and golf ball size in parts of Omaha and the Bennington area, and a June storm that year reported hail over three inches in Papillion and La Vista. Seasons like that fill roofers' calendars, and gutters come off thousands of houses.
That rush is when gutters get damaged in removal or rehung in a hurry on old spikes. Having a gutter crew handle the detach and reset keeps the roofer moving and gets your gutters back up straight, pitched and on new hangers. If storm damage tore gutters loose before the roofer arrives, see storm damage repair.

FAQ
Gutter Detach and Reset questions
Can my roofer just take the gutters off and put them back?
Many roofers do, and some do it well. The common problems are bent runs from lifting them by one end, gutters rehung on the same loose spikes, and pitch that ends up wrong because nobody snapped a line. If your roofer prefers to hand the gutters off, we coordinate dates with them so the gutters come down the morning the tear-off starts and go back up after the final roof inspection.
Will my old gutters fit back on after a new roof?
Usually, yes, as long as the fascia and roof edge stay where they were. A new drip edge can change where water lands slightly, so we adjust the hanger height to keep the back of the gutter tucked under it. If the roofer adds new fascia or changes the eave, some runs may need trimming, new end caps or a new section to fit.
Is it worth resetting sectional gutters?
Sometimes, but often not. Sectional gutters leak at their joints, and taking them down tears the old sealant at every seam. They can be resealed and rehung, though the labor of resealing every joint adds up. When the house is already torn apart for roofing or siding, many owners decide to switch to seamless at that point, since removal is already paid for.
How long are the gutters off the house?
As long as the roofing or siding work takes. For a typical roof replacement that is often just a few days, and we usually reset the gutters within a day or two of the roofer finishing. During that time water comes straight off the roof edge, so in a wet stretch we can set temporary extensions at the corners that matter most for the basement.
Do you detach and reset gutter guards too?
Yes. Guards come off with the gutters, are stored with their runs and go back on after the gutters are rehung. Some older drop-in guards do not survive removal well, and guards tucked under the first shingle course need the roofer's new shingles in place before they can be reset. We tell you up front if your guards are likely to need replacing.
