Carter Lake is an Iowa town you reach without crossing the Missouri River. It sits on low, flat oxbow ground beside Eppley Airfield, and its gutters see hail, lakeside trees and slow-draining soil.

Quick answer

We repair and clean gutters in Carter Lake, Iowa: dented runs after hail, dripping corners, loose hangers, clogged downspouts and seasonal clean-outs with a downspout flush. Our crews come from the downtown Omaha office, just a few minutes away, and every visit ends with photos of what we found. Call us any hour.

Carter Lake owes its odd location to a flood. In March 1877 the Missouri River jumped its channel and cut off a loop called Saratoga Bend, leaving the oxbow lake the town is named for and leaving this land on the Nebraska side of the new channel. In Nebraska v. Iowa in 1892, the US Supreme Court ruled the land still belonged to Iowa, and Carter Lake incorporated in 1930 after splitting from Council Bluffs. It is the only Iowa city west of the river.

Today it counts 3,791 residents in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, and it wraps around the south and west sides of Eppley Airfield. For our crews, that makes it one of the closest towns to the shop. It is a short drive north from downtown Omaha, so a single leaking corner or a midseason clean-out is as easy to schedule here as anywhere in the metro.

Modest houses on low, level ground

Much of Carter Lake is made up of one-story homes and smaller two-story houses on compact lots, with lakefront properties along the water. Shorter eaves and simple rooflines make gutter work here direct, but they also mean nobody looks at the gutters until something drips. The common finds are old sectional runs with sealant gone brittle at the seams, end caps that weep in every rain, and outlets half blocked by grit washed off aging shingles.

Most of those are repair jobs, not replacements. We clean the seam back to bare metal, re-rivet where the joint has loosened and reseal it so it stays tight through the next freeze. Loose spikes come out and hidden hangers go in, screwed into solid wood. When a system has more patches than good metal, we say so and price a seamless replacement for comparison, but we do not push one when a repair will hold.

Oxbow ground, lake trees and hail

The land here is old river bottom, flat and low, so water that leaves a downspout does not run off quickly. A clogged gutter that overflows along its whole length drops water on the ground right at the foundation, where it lingers. Keeping gutters and downspouts flowing is the first defense, and Nebraska Extension recommends cleaning both twice a year. Cottonwoods drop seed fluff each late spring, and silver maples add winged seeds, and both settle into gutters near the lake.

Storms do not stop at the river either. On April 26, 2024, golf ball sized hail fell on Carter Lake, along with Omaha and the Bennington area. Hail that size dents the front lip of aluminum gutters, crushes the top of downspouts and can crack sealed corners. Some damage shows right away; some shows up weeks later as a new drip at a miter that was fine before the storm.

FAQ

Gutter questions from Carter Lake

Does it matter that Carter Lake is in Iowa when you work on my gutters?

Not for the work itself. Carter Lake is a city in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, even though it sits on the Omaha side of the Missouri River, and we serve it from our downtown Omaha office just a few minutes away. The crew, coil, methods and 24/7 phone line are the same as on any Nebraska job. Only your address and your local rules are Iowa.

My Carter Lake gutters got hit by the April 2024 hail but still drain. Should I worry?

Possibly. Dents in the front lip often leave a gutter draining fine, but hail can also crack sealant at corners and flatten the top of downspouts, which shows up later as drips or overflow. A gutter inspection with photos tells you what changed and gives you a record if you plan to talk with your insurer.

How often should gutters be cleaned on a Carter Lake house near the water?

Twice a year works for most homes: once after the cottonwood fluff and maple seeds finish in early summer, and once after the leaves drop in late fall. Houses right under big trees may need a third visit. Our gutter cleaning schedule can help you work out timing based on the trees around your lot.

Why does water stand in my Carter Lake gutter days after it rains?

Either the outlet is partly blocked or the gutter has lost its slope as hangers loosened. Standing water is more than an eyesore near the lake, since it gives mosquitoes a place to breed and adds weight that pulls hangers further. We clear the outlet, check the pitch with a level and re-hang the run so water moves steadily toward the downspout.
