Quick answer
In Springfield we clean gutters and downspouts, install new seamless gutters on homes, and put proper gutters on garages, shops and pole barns. Cleanings include hand removal, a downspout flush and a look at every hanger and seam. Our crews drive down from the Omaha office, and you can call us at any hour.
J. D. Spearman, a Civil War veteran, platted Springfield in 1873, just ahead of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The rail line is gone, but its path survives as the MoPac Trail, and the town still has the feel of a railroad stop, with a compact grid of older homes surrounded by farm ground and acreages.
About 1,500 people lived in Springfield in 2020, and every August the Sarpy County Fair brings a crowd to town. A place this size does not see many gutter crews, so we often find systems that have gone a long time between cleanings, along with outbuildings that never had gutters at all.
Older town lots and acreage buildings
The houses on the original blocks are mostly older one and two story frame homes, plus ranches added later, many with 5-inch K-style gutters well past their best years. The usual problems are joints that leak, hangers working loose from fascia that has dried and cracked, and downspouts that end at the corner of a basement wall.
Out on the acreages, the house is only part of the job. Detached garages, machine sheds and pole barns with metal roofs shed water fast and drop it right where you park or walk. Gutters on those buildings need to be larger and firmly anchored, because snow sliding off a metal roof can tear an ordinary gutter clean off.
Mature trees and what they drop
Older Nebraska towns were planted heavily with silver maples, and Springfield's established blocks are no exception. Silver maples set heavy seed crops in late spring, and the Nebraska Forest Service notes those winged seeds commonly clog gutters. Cottonwood, adopted as the state tree in 1972, adds its fluff in the same weeks.
Seeds and fluff mat together in the trough, then a late spring storm washes the mat into the downspout elbow, where it packs solid. That is why we push for a cleaning right after seed drop, not just in the fall. Nebraska Extension recommends cleaning gutters and downspouts twice a year, and around these trees that is the minimum.

Packed maple seeds and fluff turn elbows into plugs. We clear them from the bottom and the top, then run water through to confirm the line drains all the way out.

For most Springfield ranches and older two-story homes, a 5-inch K-style gutter in a color matched to the trim is the practical, good-looking choice.

FAQ
Gutter questions from Springfield
When is the best time to clean gutters in Springfield with silver maples nearby?
Right after the maple seeds and cottonwood fluff finish falling in late spring, then again after the fall leaves are down. The spring visit is the one people skip, and it is the one that prevents overflow during the wettest part of the year. If several big maples hang over the roof, a midsummer check can be worth it. Our cleaning schedule tool helps you plan.
Do you put gutters on pole barns and machine sheds around Springfield?
Yes. Metal-roofed outbuildings usually need 6-inch gutters or larger, heavier hangers at close spacing and downspouts big enough for a steep, slick roof. We also plan for snow slide, since a sheet of snow off a metal roof can rip a gutter down. Downspouts can go to a drain line, a rock bed or a rain barrel, depending on the site.
Why does water pour out of the top of the downspout on my Springfield house?
That is almost always a clog at the bottom elbow or where the downspout enters an underground line. Seeds and fluff wash down and pack tight, so water backs up and spills out at the gutter outlet. We clear the elbow, flush the line and check whether the outlet size or the number of downspouts is part of the problem.
Is it worth replacing old K-style gutters on a small Springfield home?
If the gutters are sectional and leaking at several joints, sagging, or rusting through at the corners, yes. A small home needs fewer feet of gutter, so a full seamless system is often a modest job, and our price guide shows typical ranges. If the runs are sound but dirty, a good cleaning and a few new hangers may be all you need.
