Quick answer

We install seamless gutters and clean gutters and downspouts across Washington County, including Blair, Fort Calhoun, Arlington, Kennard and Herman, plus the acreages and farmsteads between them. Our own crews form gutters on site, repair storm damage and flush clogged downspouts. Call us any hour to talk through your house, shop or barn.

Washington County was one of the eight counties Nebraska started with in 1854, and its seat moved before settling. Fort Calhoun and then DeSoto held it first, and Blair took over in 1869, the year the Sioux City and Pacific Railroad arrived and the town was platted and named for railroad investor John Insley Blair.

About 20,865 people lived in the county in 2020, with Blair holding roughly 7,790 of them. The rest are spread across small towns and rural roads, which is where much of our work here happens: farmhouses with porch roofs, newer homes on acreage lots and outbuildings that have gone years without gutters.

Farmhouses, acreage builds and machine sheds

Older farmhouses here tend to have several roof levels: a main gable, a porch, a back kitchen addition, sometimes a mudroom added later. Each small roof dumps water onto the one below or onto the ground beside the foundation. Gutters on every level, with downspouts that never empty onto another roof's shingles, solve problems owners have lived with for years.

Newer acreage homes are a different job, with long eaves and tall walls that call for careful slope over 40 or 50 feet. We often split a long eave so it drains from the middle to a downspout at each end. Detached garages and sheds get the same seamless treatment, sized for steel panels that shed water and snow quickly.

Tornado tracks, river bluffs and tree lines

The EF4 tornado of April 26, 2024 finished its 31.2 mile path near Blair after starting at Elkhorn. Homes that kept their roofs still lost gutters to wind and debris, and some runs that look fine from the ground were twisted on their hangers. A run with no slope left holds water, freezes in winter and pulls loose the next spring.

On the east side the county drops through loess bluffs to the Missouri River bottoms, and that fine wind-laid silt erodes quickly under a concentrated stream of water. Part of the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge lies in the county, a reminder of how much bottomland timber lines the river. Cottonwood fluff in late spring and leaves in fall make cleaning a twice-a-year job, which matches Nebraska Extension advice and our cleaning schedule tool.

Where Washington County homeowners start

Gutter Cleaning

Tree lines, river bottom cottonwoods and shelterbelts drop seed and leaves into gutters each spring and fall. A hand clean-out with downspout flushing keeps acreage homes draining.

Gutter Maintenance Plans

For rural homes a long way from town, scheduled spring and fall visits clear the gutters before the cottonwood drop and before freeze-up, with no ladder work for you.

Storm Damage Gutter Repair

After the 2024 tornado and the storms that roll through every spring, we secure loose or hanging gutters first, then come back for permanent repair or replacement.

Seamless Gutter Installation

Long acreage eaves benefit most from one-piece runs. With no joints there is nothing to separate when the gutter flexes in wind or under a load of ice.

Garage, Shed and Barn Gutters

Machine sheds, pole barns and detached garages come with most properties here. Gutters keep water away from overhead doors and stop ruts forming along the walls.

Downspout Extensions

On loess bluffs and sloped yards, carrying water several feet out keeps it from undercutting foundations and washing away the soil beside the house.

Farmhouses with several roof levels need each downspout checked so water skips the lower roofs.

Blair, the river and the county roads

Blair sits on the Missouri River bluffs on the county's east side, with Fort Calhoun to the south toward Omaha and the DeSoto refuge along the river. Kennard and Arlington lie to the southwest, closer to the Elkhorn River valley, and Herman is up north. We reach the county from our Omaha office through Douglas County, and we cover Dodge County to the west as well.

FAQ

Gutter questions from Washington County

Do you clean gutters on farmhouses with several roof levels outside Blair?

Yes. Farmhouses with porches, additions and back entries often have four or five separate gutter runs at different heights. We clean each one by hand, flush every downspout and check whether upper downspouts empty onto a lower roof. Where they do, a short extension or a reroute down the wall keeps water off the lower shingles and stops the lower gutter from overflowing.

Could the April 2024 tornado have damaged gutters near Blair even if the roof survived?

Possibly. Strong wind can bend hangers, twist a run out of level or crack a corner miter without bringing the gutter down. Standing water after rain, drips at the corners or a run that looks wavy from the yard are the signs to watch. A written inspection with photos sorts out what needs repair and what is only cosmetic.

How often should gutters be cleaned on an acreage near the DeSoto refuge?

Twice a year is the baseline Nebraska Extension recommends, and it fits most acreage homes here: once after the cottonwood seed drop in late spring and once after the leaves come down. Properties with big cottonwoods right over the roof may need a midsummer check too. Micro-mesh guards can stretch the time between cleanings.

Can a long acreage eave drain without water sitting in the middle?

Yes. On eaves longer than about 40 feet we often slope the gutter from the middle toward a downspout at each end, which keeps the fall steady and the water moving. We set the line with a string, use hidden hangers into solid fascia or rafter tails, and size the downspouts so neither end overflows in a heavy rain.
