Gutter Repair in Omaha for Leaks, Sags and Loose Runs

A drip at the corner, a run that bows in the middle, a downspout lying in the flower bed. Most gutter problems start small and get expensive once water reaches the fascia, siding or basement.

Quick answer

Gutter repair covers the fixes that keep an existing system working: resealing leaks, rehanging sagging runs, correcting pitch, reattaching downspouts, replacing damaged sections and clearing blockages. A repair visit makes sense when the gutters are mostly sound. When problems are everywhere, we tell you that replacement is the better spend.

Gutters fail in a handful of predictable ways, and most of them can be fixed without tearing anything off the house. Seams open up, hangers loosen, a run settles until water pools in the middle, a downspout elbow packs solid with seeds. Each one has a specific fix, and a good repair visit catches the related problems at the same time.

This page is the overview. Below we walk through the common problems, what a visit from our crew includes, and where the line sits between fixing what you have and starting over. Each type of repair also has its own page with more detail.

The repairs we do most often

Leaks at corners, end caps and outlets top the list. Sealant dries out, shrinks and lets go, especially on older systems. We strip the old material, clean the metal, re-rivet where needed and apply fresh gutter sealant. Our leaking gutter repair page goes through each leak point.

Sagging comes next. Spikes and ferrules back out of the fascia over years of expansion, ice loads and ladder pressure, and the run tips forward or bows. The fix is hidden hangers screwed into solid wood, covered in detail on sagging gutter repair.

Pitch problems show up as standing water or overflow at the far end from the downspout. Sometimes the house has settled, sometimes the gutter was hung level from day one. We reset the run to a string line, as explained on our re-pitching page.

  • Resealing miters, end caps and outlet tubes
  • Replacing spikes with hidden hangers into solid fascia
  • Re-pitching runs that hold water or spill at the wrong end
  • Reattaching or replacing downspouts, elbows and straps
  • Cutting in a new outlet and downspout on overloaded runs
  • Replacing short dented or crushed sections

What a repair visit includes

A repair call is not just a fix for the one spot you noticed. We clean out the section we are working on, run water through the whole system, and watch where it leaks, where it pools and where it overflows. Hangers get a tug test. Fascia gets probed at the corners and behind any drip marks.

Then we tell you what we found, fix what you approve, and test again with water before we leave. If something turns up that is outside gutter work, such as rotted roof decking or a missing kick-out flashing, we point it out so you can plan for it.

Downspout and drainage fixes

Many gutter complaints are really downspout problems. A clogged elbow makes the gutter overflow even when the trough is clean. A downspout that ends right at the foundation sends water back toward the basement. A loose strap lets the pipe swing in the wind until it pulls the outlet out of the gutter bottom.

We clear blocked downspouts, replace crushed elbows, add straps and extend discharge away from the house. For stubborn clogs in buried lines and packed elbows, see downspout unclogging.

When repair stops making sense

Repairs are good value on a system that is mostly sound. They stop being good value when every visit finds a new leak, when the gutters are sectional and leaking at most joints, when they are too small for the roof, or when hail has dented most of the runs.

Our rough rule: if the list of repairs covers more than a third of the system, or if the same section has been fixed more than twice, put the money toward new seamless gutters. We will price both ways when it is close, and the gutter replacement page explains what a full replacement involves.

Storm and winter damage

Wind, falling limbs, hail and ice cause a different kind of repair. Gutters can be torn partly off the house, crushed flat or split along the bottom. After a storm we make things safe first, removing hanging sections or securing them, then plan the permanent fix. The storm damage page covers emergencies, and you can call us any hour of the day or night.

What to look for

Signs your gutters need repair

Drips at corners and ends

Water falling from miters, end caps or the base of a downspout outlet during rain means sealant has failed or a rivet has loosened at that joint.

A bow or dip in the run

A section that dips between hangers or tips forward shows fasteners letting go, and the low spot spills water every time it rains.

Water pouring over the front

Overflow along the face of the gutter in moderate rain usually points to a clog in the downspout, poor pitch, or a run with too few outlets.

Stripes on siding or brick

Dirty vertical streaks on the wall below the gutter show where water has been running behind or over the trough for some time.

Soft fascia at the corners

Peeling paint or soft wood behind the gutter means water has been reaching the board, and the gutter will soon lose its grip there.

Downspout hanging loose

A downspout swinging free or detached at an elbow dumps water at the foundation and can pull the outlet out of the gutter bottom.

How the job goes

How a gutter repair visit works

  1. 1

    Talk through the problem

When you call, tell us what you are seeing and where. We ask a few questions about the house, the gutters and recent storms so the crew arrives with the right parts.

  2. 2

    Water test the system

On site we clear the trouble area, flush the gutters with a hose and watch every seam, outlet and run so we see the actual leak points rather than guessing.

  3. 3

    Explain what we found

You get a plain rundown of each problem, what it takes to fix and what can wait. If replacement makes more sense than repair, we say so and explain why.

  4. 4

    Make the repairs

Seams are cleaned and resealed, hangers replaced, runs re-pitched, downspouts refastened or cleared, all with materials matched to your existing gutters.

  5. 5

    Test again and clean up

We run water through again to confirm each repair holds, haul away old parts and debris, and point out anything to keep an eye on.

Omaha conditions

Why Omaha gutters need repair

Our weather works gutters hard. Omaha sees about 27 inches of snow in an average year, January lows in the teens and more winter thaws than it used to, so ice forms and melts in the troughs over and over. Each cycle tugs on hangers and opens sealant at seams. Then spring and summer bring the heaviest rain of the year, with May the wettest month.

Trees add to it. Cottonwood fluff and silver maple seeds pack downspout elbows in late spring, and the brittle wood of silver maples drops limbs onto roof edges in storms. A spring check after seed drop catches most problems before the summer storms test them.

FAQ

Gutter Repair questions

How do I know if my gutters can be repaired instead of replaced?

If the gutters are seamless, mostly straight and the problems are limited to a few spots, repair is usually the right call. If they are sectional and leaking at many joints, badly dented by hail, too small for the roof or the same spots keep failing, replacement is often the better spend. We water test the system and give you a straight answer, with prices for both when it is close.

Can you repair just one section of gutter?

Yes. A dented or crushed section can be cut out and replaced, and a single leaking corner or loose run can be fixed on its own. On seamless gutters, a new section means adding a seam, which we rivet and seal carefully. Color matching to faded existing gutters is not always exact, so on a front elevation we sometimes suggest replacing the full run.

Do you repair gutters in winter?

We do many repairs in winter as long as the gutters are free of ice and the roof edge is safe to work on. Sealant needs dry, reasonably mild conditions to cure, so some resealing waits for a warmer stretch. Rehanging, downspout repairs and emergency work after ice or wind damage can usually be handled any time of year.

Why do my gutters overflow even though they are clean?

Clean gutters that still overflow usually have a clogged downspout, poor pitch or too few outlets for the roof area. A valley that concentrates water at an inside corner can also overshoot the gutter in heavy rain. We water test to find which of these is the cause, since each has a different fix, from clearing an elbow to adding a downspout or splash guard.

Will a gutter repair stop water in my basement?

It can help a lot if the water is coming from overflowing gutters or downspouts discharging at the foundation. Fixing leaks, clearing clogs and extending downspouts so water lands well away from the house removes a common source. Basement water can also come from grading, the water table or sewer backups, so gutter work is one piece of the picture rather than a sure cure.
