Quick answer

Emergency gutter repair is the first visit after something goes wrong suddenly: a run torn loose and hanging, a downspout ripped off before a heavy rain, or water dumping into a doorway or window well. The goal is to make it safe and get the water going somewhere harmless, then plan the permanent fix in daylight. Our phone is answered 24/7.

Most gutter problems can wait for a weekday. A slow drip at a corner or a sag you noticed while mowing will still be there next Tuesday. An emergency is different: something is about to fall on a person or a car, or water is getting into the house, usually the basement.

This page is about those first hours. It covers how to tell a true emergency from an urgent nuisance, what you can safely do from the ground, and what our make-safe visit includes. If wind or a falling limb did the damage and you also need it documented, read our storm damage repair page as well.

What counts as a gutter emergency

The test is simple: is someone at risk of getting hurt, or is water actively getting into the house? If the answer to either is yes, call us whatever the hour. If neither is true, it is still worth a call, but it can usually be scheduled.

Timing matters too. A downspout lying in the yard during a dry week is a weekday job. The same downspout with thunderstorms on the radar is a night job, because the next rain is about to land against the foundation.

  • A gutter run hanging over a walkway, steps, deck or driveway
  • Water pouring into a window well, doorway or garage
  • A section torn loose by wind or ice and banging the house
  • A downspout ripped off with heavy rain in the forecast
  • Fascia pulled away with the gutter, leaving the roof edge open

What to do before we get there

Stay off the ladder. A loose gutter full of water or ice is heavy and unpredictable, a wet roof edge is slick, and a run can let go the moment you pull on it.

From the ground you can do a lot. Move cars if a section hangs over the driveway, block off steps or a deck it could fall onto, and keep kids and pets inside. If water is pouring into a window well or against a door, lay a hose, a spare length of downspout or a folded tarp to steer it a few feet from the wall.

The make-safe visit

When we arrive, the first job is to stop things getting worse. A run that can be saved is lifted back and screwed into solid wood temporarily. A twisted section that will never hold a line again is cut free and lowered to the ground rather than left to swing. Loose downspouts are strapped back or removed.

Then we deal with the water: a temporary downspout and extension carried well out from the foundation, a section rehung just long enough to protect a doorway, or a tarp over a roof edge where the fascia came away. We tell you which pieces are temporary and how long they should hold.

Night work and its limits

Some things are better done in daylight, and we will be straight with you about it. Forming a new seamless run, replacing rotted fascia or setting a precise pitch on a long gutter all need light and dry conditions. At night the priority is safety and water control, with the finished work planned for the next suitable day.

We will not put a crew on a two-story ladder in lightning, high wind or freezing rain. In those conditions we talk you through ground-level steps by phone and come out once it is safe to climb. We never promise an arrival time, because weather and call volume after a storm decide that.

After the emergency: the permanent repair

Once the house is safe, we come back to look at everything properly. Runs that came down without bending can usually be rehung on new hidden hangers, screwed into rafter tails or sound fascia. Kinked or split runs are replaced with a new seamless piece formed on site to match. Soft wood behind the gutter is handled through fascia replacement before anything goes back up.

We also ask why it failed. A gutter that tore off under ice may need closer hanger spacing or a look at ice dam damage. One that overflowed into a window well may be too small for the roof above it, which our gutter size calculator can help you check, or may simply need a longer downspout extension.

What to look for

Call us right away if you see

A run hanging free

One end of a gutter has dropped below the eave and is held only by a corner or a single hanger, swaying over a path or parked car.

Window well filling

Water from an overflowing gutter or missing downspout is landing in a basement window well and rising toward the glass during a storm.

Water at the doorway

Roof runoff is sheeting over the gutter above a front or garage door, puddling on the threshold and running inside under the weatherstrip.

Banging in the wind

A loose section is knocking against siding, windows or the roof edge with each gust, loosening more hangers every time it moves.

Downspout torn away

The downspout has come off the outlet or wall before a forecast storm, leaving roof water to drop straight down beside the foundation.

Fascia pulled loose

The board behind the gutter has split or pulled away from the rafters, leaving a gap where rain can reach the roof deck and soffit.

How the job goes

What happens after you call

  1. 1

Talk it through on the phone

We ask what is hanging, where the water is going and what is underneath, then give you safe ground-level steps to take while a crew is arranged.

  2. 2

    Arrive and secure

The crew checks the area from the ground, then secures or removes the hanging section and any loose downspouts so nothing can fall on people or property.

  3. 3

    Redirect the water

A temporary downspout, extension or rehung section moves roof water away from window wells, doors and the foundation until the permanent repair is done.

  4. 4

    Explain what is temporary

Before leaving, we show you which parts are stopgaps, what the permanent fix involves and what to keep an eye on during the next rain.

  5. 5

    Return for the real repair

In daylight and dry weather we rehang, replace or extend the damaged runs, repair fascia if needed and flow test the finished system.

Pricing

What emergency gutter work costs

An emergency visit is usually priced like a repair, with any replacement gutter or downspout added on. The rows below show published ranges for the work most first visits turn into.

ItemPublished range
Minor repair, small sag or reattach$75 to $300
Typical gutter repair visit$100 to $450
New downspout, each$30 to $75 per downspout
Ground level downspout extension$5 to $15 per downspout

National ranges published by HomeGuide, Forbes Home. Your price depends on the house; we give you a number on the phone or at the house before any work starts. See the full gutter price guide.

The hour, the height of the eave, how much gutter came down, and whether fascia or a full new run is needed for the permanent repair move the total. Our price guide has more ranges.

Omaha conditions

Why the first hours matter in Omaha

Roof water adds up fast. City stormwater figures put a one inch rain on a 1,000 square foot roof at more than 600 gallons, and Omaha's wettest stretch runs from May through August. With a downspout gone, much of that lands in one spot beside the foundation. Nebraska Extension advises discharging at least 5 feet from the house to keep it out of basements, which is why we redirect water first.

Trees and ice cause the rest. Silver maple was planted along streets and yards across Nebraska cities, and its brittle wood breaks in storms, often across the gutter line. In winter, gutters packed with ice can bend and tear away from the house, pulling fascia and downspouts down with them. Both tend to happen at night, in bad weather, when a call answered around the clock helps most.

FAQ

Emergency Gutter Repair questions

Can I just pull a dangling gutter down myself?

We advise against it. A hanging run can still be screwed in at one end, full of water or ice, and it can spring or swing when you pull, often toward the person pulling. Tugging also rips fascia and shingles that would otherwise be fine. Keep everyone clear, move cars and let us take it down from a properly set ladder.

Water is pouring into my basement window well right now. What should I do?

Steer the water first. Lay a spare downspout, a hose or a folded tarp so the flow lands several feet from the wall instead of in the well. If the well has a cover, put it on. Check that the well drain is not blocked with leaves. Then call us so we can restore the downspout or gutter that failed.

Will a night visit fix the gutter completely?

Sometimes, for simple jobs such as reattaching a downspout or rehanging a run that came off its hangers without bending. More often the night visit makes things safe and controls the water, and the finished repair happens in daylight. Forming new seamless gutter, replacing fascia and setting accurate pitch all go better with light and a dry roof.

Is a torn-off downspout worth an after-hours call?

If heavy rain is coming, often yes. Without the downspout, everything that gutter collects drops in one place beside the foundation, which is how basements take on water. If the weather is dry for the next few days, it can wait for a regular visit. Lay something to carry water away from the wall in the meantime.

What should I photograph before the gutter is moved?

Take a few wide shots from the ground showing the whole wall and the hanging section, then closer shots of the torn hangers, any fascia damage and anything that hit it, such as a branch. Note the date and time. Those photos help us plan the permanent repair and are useful if you later talk to your insurer.
