Wahoo was founded in 1870 and took its name from the eastern wahoo, a shrub that grew along Wahoo Creek. Czech, German and Scandinavian families settled much of it, and the town has been the seat of Saunders County since it won that title in an 1873 vote. The 2020 Census counted 4,818 people.
Visitors notice the memorial to the World War II submarine USS Wahoo on the courthouse lawn, and plenty of people still remember the town as the home office of the Late Show Top Ten List starting in 1996. The streets around the courthouse hold two-story frame houses and cottages, some with open front porches that have their own short roof and their own little gutter.
