Quick answer

Hastings Seamless Gutters runs its own crews out of a downtown Omaha office on South 13th Street. We roll seamless aluminum gutters on site, fix leaks and sags, replace hail-dented runs, clean and guard gutters, and sort out downspout drainage on every kind of Omaha house, from prewar brick to new builds at the western edge. Call us any hour.

Omaha was founded at a Fourth of July picnic in 1854 and sits about 1,060 feet above sea level along the Missouri River. That age shows on the roofs. Close to half the homes in the city went up before 1970, and plenty still carry original fascia, patched sectional gutters or wood box gutters tucked into the cornice.

With roughly 489,000 people in the city, the range of houses is wide. A 1915 Tudor near midtown and a recent two-story on the west side need different gutters, different hangers and a different plan for where the water goes. So every job starts with us walking the roofline and the yard before we put a number on anything.

What Omaha houses ask of their gutters

Census numbers tell the story: about 18 percent of homes date to 1939 or earlier, and another 28 percent were built between 1940 and 1969. On the older end that means built-in box gutters, half-round runs, thick old fascia full of nail holes and downspouts that empty right at the foundation. On the mid-century end it means long ranch eaves where 5-inch K-style gutters droop between spikes that have worked loose.

Newer neighborhoods bring the opposite problem. Big roof planes, steep pitches and valleys that dump into one corner can swamp a 5-inch gutter in a May storm, so we size up to 6-inch gutters and 3x4 downspouts where the roof calls for it. On any age of house we space hidden hangers about every 24 inches, screw them into solid wood and pitch each run toward its outlet.

Rain totals, hail and the river

Omaha averages about 31.7 inches of rain and melted snow a year. May is the wettest month at roughly 4.7 inches, with August and June right behind, and much of it comes in short, heavy cells rather than slow soaking rain. A gutter that keeps up with a drizzle can still overflow at inside corners when one of those cells parks over the house.

In the older core of the city, the combined sewer system spans about 43 square miles of pipe carrying sewage and stormwater together. That is one more reason to keep roof water on the surface and out in the yard instead of piped into a floor drain. Our downspout extensions and buried lines always discharge to the lawn or a pop-up emitter, never into a sewer connection.

Seamless Gutter Installation

Many Omaha homes still have sectional or aging gutters. Rolling one-piece aluminum runs on site removes the seams that leak first and lets us set pitch and outlets to the real roof.

Hail Damage Gutter Replacement

Spring and summer hail leaves dents along gutter faces and crushed elbows at the bottom of downspouts. We photograph and measure the damage, then replace what cannot be saved.

Built-In Box Gutter Repair

Pre-1940 houses near downtown and in midtown often hide wood box gutters in the cornice. Relining them stops rot from spreading into rafter tails, soffits and plaster walls.

Downspout Extensions

On older lots downspouts often empty beside the foundation. Carrying that water well out into the yard is the least expensive fix for a damp Omaha basement.

Gutter Cleaning

Cottonwood fluff in late spring and leaf drop in fall pack gutters twice a year. A hand clean with a downspout flush and hanger check keeps both seasons from causing overflow.

Commercial Gutters

Downtown storefronts, churches and small offices need heavier box gutters, scuppers and conductor heads. We plan commercial work around business hours so entrances stay open.

Downtown, the riverfront and the rest of the city

Our main office is downtown on South 13th Street, a short walk from the Old Market, where brick paving from around 1900 and wholesale buildings from the 1880s fill the blocks between 10th, 13th, Farnam and Jackson. The rebuilt Gene Leahy Mall reopened in 2022 as the first phase of the RiverFront project, and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge has crossed to Council Bluffs since 2008. From here our trucks reach older neighborhoods like Dundee quickly, and the same crews cover Millard and Elkhorn out west.

FAQ

Gutter questions from Omaha

Do you cover all of Omaha from the downtown office?

Yes. Our Omaha crews work from the South 13th Street office and cover every part of the city, from the river neighborhoods to the newest subdivisions on the west side, plus the surrounding Douglas and Sarpy County towns. Hastings, Grand Island and the Adams County area are handled from our second office in Juniata. One phone line serves both, and it is answered around the clock.

Which gutter size fits a typical Omaha house?

For most ranches and modest two-story homes, 5-inch K-style aluminum in .027 or .032 gauge with 2x3 or 3x4 downspouts does the job. We move to 6-inch when a roof has big planes, a steep pitch, a metal surface or a valley that dumps into one corner. We measure each roof face before recommending a size, and our price guide shows how the two compare.

Can old gutters near downtown be replaced without changing the look of the house?

Usually, yes. On brick and frame homes from before the war we often match the original with half-round aluminum or copper, round downspouts and decorative brackets, or we reline an existing box gutter so the cornice line stays the same. Where the fascia behind an old gutter has rotted, we replace that wood first so the new hangers have something solid to grip.

What should I do right after a hailstorm dents my gutters?

Take dated photos of the gutter faces, downspouts and any dented vents or siding, and note the largest hailstones you saw. Then call us to measure and document the damage in writing. Your insurer decides on any claim. Our part is giving your adjuster clear evidence and replacing the runs that cannot be saved. Our guide to documenting hail damage covers the details.
