Omaha, NebraskaQuick answer
Downspout unclogging clears blocked outlets, elbows and downspout pipes, plus the buried drain lines many Omaha homes have below them. We flush, snake and test each line until water runs freely to its discharge point. You need it when water pools in the gutter near the outlet, spills over the front in rain, or barely trickles from the downspout bottom.
Downspouts clog at the turns. Debris washes along the gutter, drops through the outlet and lodges at the first elbow, where the water changes direction. Each storm adds another layer until the plug is solid. Late spring is the worst stretch, when cottonwood fluff and maple seeds arrive within weeks of each other.
A clog rarely stays put. Water backs up into the gutter, overflows at the outlet end, and soaks the ground right beside the foundation. If the downspout feeds a buried line, the clog may sit underground where no one sees it. We clear each part of the path, top to bottom, and test until water moves through freely.
Where downspouts clog
The outlet and the top elbow catch most debris. A burr left on the outlet edge snags leaves, and seeds lodge behind it. The top elbow, where the pipe turns back toward the wall, packs next.
Lower down, the bottom elbow and any connection to a buried line are common trouble spots. Underground, corrugated pipe collects silt in its ridges and can be crushed by roots or settling soil, which gives clogs a place to start.
- The gutter outlet, especially if cut rough or too small
- The top elbow at the eave
- Offset elbows that jog around trim or a window
- The bottom elbow at the discharge
- The adapter where a downspout enters a buried line
Cottonwood fluff and helicopter seeds
Cottonwood fluff is light when dry and turns into felt when wet. It mats with pollen and shingle grit into a dense plug that water cannot push through. Silver maple seeds, the winged helicopters, arrive at the same time of year and wedge into elbows like wooden pegs.
Together they make the late spring clog that we see across the metro. Clearing gutters after the seed drop helps, but the downspouts need their own attention, since a clean gutter feeding a packed elbow still overflows. Our cottonwood season guide explains the timing.
Flushing, snaking and taking it apart
We start at the top. With the gutter clear, we run water into the outlet and see how it behaves. A slow drain gets flushed from above with a hose. A solid plug gets a plumber's snake fed down from the outlet or up from the bottom.
When an elbow is packed too tight to snake, we remove it, clear it by hand and refit it with new screws. That is often faster than fighting the clog from above and avoids damaging a downspout that is already under strain.
Checking the buried line below
Many Omaha homes have downspouts that connect to buried pipe, either running to a pop-up emitter in the yard or out to daylight at the curb or a slope. If the downspout clears but water still backs up, the clog is underground.
We flush the line from the downspout end and check that water comes out at the outlet. A line that will not clear may be crushed, broken by roots or full of silt. Our underground drain service covers repair or replacement when that happens.
Keeping downspouts clear
Clean gutters twice a year, timed after the late spring seed drop and after leaves come down in fall. Ask for a downspout flush at the same time, since a clean gutter feeding a packed downspout is not really clean.
If clogs return every season, the setup may be the issue. A larger outlet and a 3x4 downspout pass debris that jams a 2x3. A gutter guard matched to your trees keeps most fluff and seeds out of the system to begin with.
What to look for
Signs your downspout is clogged
Overflow at the outlet end
Water spilling over the gutter near the downspout, while the far end stays calm, means the outlet cannot drain and water is piling up there.
Trickle from the bottom
A downspout that only dribbles in a heavy rain while the gutter above fills is restricted somewhere along its length or at the elbow.
Water at the outlet after rain
Standing water in the gutter right around the outlet, while the rest of the run drains, points to a clog right at the opening.
Rattling or gurgling pipe
Odd gurgling or a hollow sound when tapped can mean air and water are fighting past a partial blockage inside the pipe.
Pop-up emitter stays down
If the yard emitter never opens in rain, the buried line between the downspout and the emitter is likely blocked or broken.
Bulge or split in the pipe
A swollen section or a crack along the seam often comes from water that froze behind a clog during winter.
How the job goes
How we clear a clogged downspout
- 1
Clear the gutter first
Debris around the outlet comes out of the gutter by hand, so nothing else washes down while we work on the downspout and the line below.
- 2
Test the flow
We run water into the outlet and watch where it slows or stops. That shows whether the clog is at the outlet, an elbow or below the ground.
- 3
Flush and snake
Slow drains get flushed from above. Solid plugs get a snake from the outlet or the bottom, working the debris loose until water passes.
- 4
Open packed elbows
Elbows too tight to clear in place come off, get cleaned by hand and go back on with new screws so the joint stays tight.
- 5
Check the buried line
If a downspout feeds underground pipe, we flush that line and confirm water reaches the emitter or daylight outlet before we finish.

Pricing
What downspout unclogging costs
Downspout clearing is usually added to a cleaning visit or priced per downspout. Heavy clogs and buried lines take longer than a quick flush.

Omaha conditions
Omaha trees and the late spring clog
The eastern cottonwood is Nebraska's state tree, and in late spring its seed fluff drifts through neighborhoods thick enough to look like snow. Silver maple drops its winged seeds around the same time, and the Nebraska Forest Service notes those seeds commonly clog gutters.
That pairing is why we see more packed downspouts in late spring than any other time. Nebraska Extension recommends cleaning gutters and downspouts twice a year, and in Omaha the first of those visits should follow the seed drop, not precede it.

FAQ
Downspout Unclogging questions
Can I unclog a downspout with a garden hose?
Sometimes. A hose fed into the outlet from above can push a loose clog through. It rarely works on a dense plug of fluff and seeds packed into an elbow, and forcing water into a blocked downspout can overflow the gutter. Avoid high-pressure nozzles inside the pipe, which can split seams. If a hose does not clear it in a few minutes, call us.
Why does my downspout clog every single spring?
Usually because of the trees overhead and the pipe size. Cottonwood fluff and silver maple seeds arrive together in late spring and pack small 2x3 elbows fast. Larger outlets and 3x4 pipe, fewer elbows and a guard that blocks fluff all reduce repeat clogs. Our downspout installation work covers upsizing.
How do I know if the clog is underground?
Take the downspout off at the bottom and run water through it. If water flows freely out the bottom but backs up when connected to the buried line, the clog is underground. A pop-up emitter that never opens during rain is another sign. We flush buried lines and can tell whether they are clogged, crushed or broken.
Can a clogged downspout cause basement water?
It can. When a downspout clogs, the gutter overflows right at the outlet, and the water lands next to the foundation instead of being carried away. Over many storms, that saturates the soil against the wall and can find its way into the basement through cracks or window wells. Keeping downspouts clear is one of the simplest ways to protect a basement.
Do clogged downspouts cause problems in winter?
Yes. Water trapped behind a clog freezes, expands and can split the downspout seam or burst an elbow. A frozen downspout also blocks meltwater, so the gutter fills with ice and gets heavy. Clearing downspouts in fall, before the first freeze, avoids most of that.
